A Rum Toddy is made with Dark or Spiced Rum, a bit of honey, hot water, a squeeze of lemon, and garnished with a cinnamon stick.
A rum toddy is a classic cocktail that’s perfect for winter. It is perfect for those cold winter nights when the wind is howling outside as it’ll keep you warm and cozy with its warm flavours. As a bartender, I’ve made thousands of Rum Toddies for people to enjoy by a cozy fireplace before they headed out into the elements.

What Type of Glass Do I Serve a Rum Toddy In?
Serve a Rum Toddy in a clear glass with a handle. This type of glass is called an Irish Coffee glass. The glass is specifically made to be heat-resistant, and it has a handle attached so you can hold the drink without burning your fingers.
What Type of Rum for a Hot Toddy?
Dark Rum is the preferred Rum for a Hot Toddy. The Dark Rum adds a caramel flavour, along with hints of vanilla, molasses and dried fruit.
Aged Rum, which has flavours of vanilla, caramel, coconut, spice and tobacco is an even better addition to your Hot Toddy. Aged Rum also costs more money, so if you are on a budget, or want to keep costs down – stick with Dark Rum. If you’re willing to go all out, my favourite spiced Rum for a Hot Toddy has to be Appleton Estate.
White Rum is also acceptable in a Hot Toddy, but don’t expect much in the way of flavour. White or Light Rum has a very mild taste.
Hot Toddy Variations
Hot Apple Toddy – Swap out the hot water for hot apple cider and the Rum for Bourbon
Black Tea Toddy – Swap out hot water for Black Tea – (use decaf if you are having before bed)
Hot Gin Toddy – Swap out Rum for Gin and add3/4 ounce of lemon juice + 2 ounces of hot water
Hot Buttered Rum – A Hot Toddy with a pat of butter. Hold the Lemon Wedge.
