Alabama Slammer Cocktail

The Alabama Slammer is made with Southern Comfort, Sloe Gin, Amaretto and Orange Juice. This cocktail is sweet, tangy, nutty and fruity, making it perfect for those long summer nights when you want to dance the night away.

Considered a retro college drink from the 70s, the Alabama Slammer has lost some steam over the years. However, this drink is good! You’ve got the nutty Amaretto mixed with the fruitier Sloe Gin, OJ and Southern Comfort. The Alabama Slammer goes down easy and keeps you refreshed and chill. Here’s how to make an Alabama Slammer:

What’s in an Alabama Slammer Shot?

An Alabama Shot is half Orange Juice and three equal parts of Sloe Gin, Amaretto and Southern Comfort.

It’s easy to make an Alabama Slammer into a Shooter. Instead of pouring your ingredients into a highball glass full of ice, strain your cocktail shaker into shot glasses instead. The above recipe will make 6 shooters.

The original Alabama Slammer was a shooter, hence the word ‘slammer’ as you’d slam down this shot. The shot is also easy enough to slam down as it goes down easy – no chaser is needed with the Alabama Slammer. Of course, too many of these shots might make you end up in ‘the slammer’ or drunk tank. (so enjoy responsibl.)

What is Sloe Gin?

Sloe Gin is a Gin based liqueur that is flavoured with Sloe Berries. The main difference between Gin and Sloe Gin is that Sloe Gin is red and sweet.

Sloe Gin is tart tastes like sour cherry, plum, pomegranate and cranberry, along with a bit of nuttiness. You can enjoy Sloe Gin neat, on the rocks, or in a variety of cocktails.

Sloe Gin Alternatives

Sloe Gin can be challenging to find, or you might not want to spend the money to buy a bottle. If you are looking for a Sloe Gin Alternative, an ounce of Plum Brandy will work well for an Alabama Slammer. The Sloe berry is a type of plum, so Sloe Gin will share a similar flavour to Plum Brandy. Crème du Cassis and Chambord are two other alternatives might work in a pinch.

Another alternative to Sloe Gin is mixing an ounce of Vodka with Grenadine. I suggest Vodka as a dry gin will change the taste of your Alabama Slammer by making it taste a bit bitter. This concoction of Vodka and Grenadine won’t taste like Sloe Gin all that much, however, it will work well enough to make the drink work. Let’s face it, after all; if you’re drinking Alabama Slammers, you probably don’t care about the subtle nuances that Sloe Gin brings to the cocktail. You probably just want something fruity, as it masks the taste of alcohol and gets you a bit tipsy.
