Can I use Cognac instead of Brandy?
Yes! Cognac is a type of Brandy and earlier Brandy Alexander recipes called for Cognac.
Can I use White Crème de Cacao instead of Dark Crème de Cacao
Dark Crème de Cacao is preferred as it gives the Brandy Alexander cocktail a creamier look. Dark Crème de Cacao also tastes more like bitter dark chocolate and vanilla, which helps balance out the cocktail. White Crème de Cacao is fine for a Brandy Alexander, however, sometimes it comes off as too sweet (depending on the brand) and make the cocktail taste a bit like chocolate milk.
Other substitutions for Crème de Cacao might be Godiva Chocolate Liqueur. Some folks also go way out and turn a Brandy Alexander into a dessert beverage by substituting condensed milk, coconut milk or vanilla ice cream for the half-and-half cream.
What is the best Brandy for a Brandy Alexander?
Hennessy X.O, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier are popular Brandies, however, there are many other excellent brands out there.
